         From the introduction:

A lot was written about Beirut during wartime. Most of what was written was for adults, about adults and people in general. But other creatures that dwell in the city, they were hardly mentioned.

Oh yes, some dailies wrote about the phenomenon of stray cats and dogs during those war days. But what about those gentle, tame creatures, and how did they live? And what happened to that special relationship that develops between a child and a house pet?

This story is an attempt at trying to find answers to some of those questions. It is also drawn from truth and fact, so that I did not even find it necessary to borrow names: Zicco is real, so is his special friend Mona. Through that gentle friendship we accompany them step by step while they move from the nice days of peace and tranquility to the calamities and agonies of war.

Some say: Those days of war and strife should be deleted from our memory and struck off the books for good. This is one opinion. But I say that we ought to remember and consider, so that the past will be a lesson to future generations.
