Baalbeck

Baalbeck, 85 Km from Beirut in the Beqaa valley, is the Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure. It is the largest and most preserved Roman temples ever built and can be counted among the wonders of the world. The acropolis encompasses the temple of Bachuss, Venus, and Jupiter. At a short distance lie the ruins of an Umayyad mosque and vestiges of Arab ramparts can be seen in the town.

The temple of Bachuss was the venue for the famous Baalbeck Festivals from 1955 to 1974, featuring international artists, famous musicians, ballet troupes, and classical drama from all parts of the world. This cherished tradition is revived again in summer 1997.
